A Bicycle Built for Two: A Parable

There was a man who owned a bicycle built for two. He would pedal it around town to all his usual places, to work, to the store, to the movies. He would always come home tired. It is hard to pedal a bicycle built for two alone.

On day this man met Jesus on the road and he asked Him to ride along, but Jesus was saddened when the man asked Him to get on the back of the bike. They pedaled along to work, to the store, and to the movies (although with Jesus along he felt kind of funny going to the movies sometimes). Life was a lot easier but it got kind of boring.

So one day the man got off his bicycle and asked Jesus to ride in the front seat. The man got on the back and they pedaled off together. They rode into different sections of town and saw people. They were different and Jesus would stop and talk with them. This made the man uncomfortable. He would ask Jesus what He was doing, and Jesus would just say “follow Me” and Jesus gave the man a book, and he would read as they rode around. One day they road on a bridge out of town and he asked Jesus where they were going and He said “follow Me”. They rode through beautiful fields and meadows. They rode through woods, they would stop and just fellowship, resting in a field with flowers. The man was happy. They saw a man with a bike on the side of the path that was broken. They stopped and helped him fix it. Jesus spent some time talking to him also.

Then they got on the bike and started riding again. They started getting into a dry place, no trees, no flowers, and no grass. The man asked Jesus where they were going. Jesus said, “follow Me”. The weather got bad and the wind started to blow and it got harder to see Jesus. After a while he could not see Him at all. All he had was the Book and the bike so he just kept pedaling trusting Jesus would lead him the right way. After what seemed like weeks the storm cleared and he saw Jesus pedaling along in front of him and they were heading across the bridge back into town. He did not need to ask why, he just followed Jesus.
