And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. 17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, 18And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. –Genesis 1:16-18
God created the Moon as a lesser light to give brightness to the night. But the moon has no light of its own; it only reflects the light of the Sun. We as Christians are called to be the light of the world: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. –Matthew 5:14-16 Like the Moon, we have no light of our own, but the Lord is our light (The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?). We share a second characteristic with the Moon. The Moon waxes and wanes (gets bigger and smaller in the sky) and it’s light is diminished not because the light of the Sun is lessened but the world gets in the way. If people cannot see the light of Jesus in us it is not because He is any less but we let the world, sin, get in the way and the light is diminished. We are letting the bushel of sin hide our light from the world. But John address this situation: This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. –1 John 1:5-9 If we allow sin in our lives we cannot have fellowship with Jesus and we are in darkness (no light) but we can have it restored if we come to Jesus seeking forgiveness. Then we can glorify our Heavenly Father.
