Influance of a Good Father III

If you did not have a good example when you were growing up or maybe you just want more ideas, don’t worry, God is the perfect example and left us many examples, both good and bad in the Bible and I want to finish up by looking at one of my favorites: Joseph. No, not that Joseph, the other one, Jesus’ step father. Just a few thoughts on what we can learn from his example:

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man], and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. –Matthew 1:18-19

Joseph was a just man and knew he had to follow the law but his justice was tempered by his compassion towards his wife. May all our decisions be tempered by compassion

Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. –Matthew 1:24-25

And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: -Matthew 2:13-14

Joseph listened to God. His did not let family, job, dwelling concerns sway him. When he heard from God, he moved. We need more men who will listen to God first.

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. –Luke 2:41-42

Joseph sent Jesus and Mary to church and watched football…NOT! He was the spiritual leader in his home and led by example. One of my earliest memories of church was sitting next to my father in the Catholic Church in Elizabeth, NJ

We need more men willing to lead by example.

Thank Dad!
