As I pointed out in my first article about friendship is that it is a give and take relationship, and Jesus has already done His part:
John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
About 2000 years ago on a old rugged cross Jesus laid down His life for us. He did this unconditionally and in love (John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life & John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any [man] pluck them out of my hand.) and He waits on us to decide if we want to be His friend or not. And because He laid down His life without condition He waits on us to do the same:
John 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
If we are to be His friend as He is ours we must lay aside our will and yield to His. What are some of His commands?
He wants us to believe in Him- John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. It is foremost in the mind and heart of Jesus that we be saved (Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.)
He wants us to love one another: John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all [men] know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. It is hard for the world to see and believe the Gospel message that Christ loved us if we are always bickering and fighting among ourselves. (I just love that about my church, we may not agree about every little thing but we have a genuine love in that place)
Show love to God and others: See The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-33) Esp.: Luke 10:27-28 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
We need to realize we need to show God’s love to the unlovable. Jesus ate with sinners, touched the leper and fed the hungry. We need to due the same. It is our responsibility in the eyes of Jesus not the governments (see Matthew 25 :32-46). When we can show this then out love is real and we can be a friend to Jesus.
This is not all but is a good start.
