One Degree of Seperation

The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge: [but] fools despise wisdom and instruction. –Proverbs 1:7

Fear: fear, terror, fearing

  1.  Fear, terror
  2. Awesome or terrifying thing (object causing fear)
  3. Fear (of God), respect, reverence, piety
  4. Revered

Last time we spent a little time on what wisdom is and we see here that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and many Christians are quick to dismiss this fear as just a reverence or awe of God and we see here it is a proper definition but in a language like Hebrew that has many different words for love cannot come up with a separate word for reverence or awe and terror. I am not saying they are not different in context but they are not foreign to each other.

And moved by fear, reverence and respect of not wanting to displease my God I try to please Him. This fear is the beginning of at least two things:

  • Knowledge (Proverbs 1:7, above)
  • Wisdom: The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy [is] understanding. –Proverbs 9:10

Having the fear of the Lord brings pleasant results:

  • Long life: The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. –Proverbs 10:27 & The fear of the LORD [is] a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.-Proverbs 14:27

  • Leads in Righteousness:  By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD [men] depart from evil. –Proverbs 16:6

  • Protects us from evil: The fear of the LORD [tendeth] to life: and [he that hath it] shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil. –Proverbs 19:23

  • And though I hesitate to use the “P” word, can help us have a prosperous life: By humility [and] the fear of the LORD [are] riches, and honour, and life. –Proverbs 22:4

The fear of the Lord is the beginning. Hopefully as we mature in Christ and become stronger Christians we move from being motivated by fear to being motivated by love:

  • If ye love me, keep my commandments. –John 14:15
  • If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. –John 15:10

I can’t thing of a place I would rather be than abiding in the love of Jesus.
