Paths and Landmarks

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where [is] the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk [therein]. –Jeremiah 6:16

Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. –Proverbs 22:8

What ever happened to that old time religion? I mean the old fashioned standards when things were right and wrong and a man’s word was his bond? It seems sometimes we are so afraid of offending anybody we stand for nothing. The new feel-good I’m right, your right so everything is all right let’s join hands and sing kuymba-ya may avoid disagreements for the time being but what are the eternal results?

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. –Revelation 20:15

We are so afraid of speaking the truth they will trip over us into the lake of fire. So what to do? We start by seeking the old paths. This does not mean we cannot use new methods (Imagine if Peter had internet access?) but we need to get back to a walking the good path and re-establishing some landmarks. Not just in the community in general but we who name the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

What are the Old Paths? Some Include:

  • The Bible is the Word Of God
  • There is a Heaven for the Saints and Hell for the unsaved.
  • We are saved by grace alone by God alone
  • Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and He died and was resurrected for my sins.
  • It is my job to witness to the lost (I am my brother’s keeper). God saves but I am commanded to go.
  • I am to live a life that brings glory to God in word and action (faith without works is dead you know).

This is by no means a comprehensive list but it is a start.

The landmarks were set to protect the inheritance of the family. It set a boundary of the property and it was meant to protect the fatherless (Proverbs 23:10). We have allowed the boundaries to be blurred and landmarks torn down. We are so afraid of hurting feelings and “stifling creativity” that we don’t want to say “no, that is wrong.” And I am sorry if it hurts your feelings but there are things that are right and proper and things that are just wrong. Want an example:

These six [things] doth the LORD hate: yea, seven [are] an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness [that] speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. –Proverbs 6:16-19

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. –John 13:34

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. –Romans 13:8

It this different, well yes but we are called to be different. Is it easy, no and frankly nothing really worth it is easy. But what an impact the church can make if The Church (that is us believers) in changing the world for the glory of God by reaching the lost one soul at a time.

Just something to think about.
