Introduction to Mark

Mark 1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;

Not a very auspicious beginning to the Gospel of Jesus, not much fanfare, not many pretty and exulting words, but of such is the Gospel of Mark. That is how it fits in the panorama that is the Gospels, four witnesses that dovetail together beautifully to give us a fuller picture of the Life of Jesus, each with its own unique perspective.

  • Matthew presents Jesus as the King of the Jews, it gives the royal genealogy through Jesus’ stepfather Joseph, His birth, His worship by the Wise-men.
  • Luke presents Jesus as the perfect man for the gentiles and therefore the unblemished genealogy through Jesus’ mother Mary and is directed at the gentiles.
  • John presents Jesus as the Son of God and God does not have a genealogy.
  • Mark presents Jesus as the servant and for a servant a genealogy is not needed His place of birth not important. What is important is that He does the will of His Lord.

Just as Jesus, as we will see as we continue our  study in Mark, gives us the example of the perfect servant, Jesus leaves us an example of what our attitude of service should be.
